From the age of 17 I started work for John Lewis, I worked there for 27 years as a Visual Merchandiser, I loved my time there working with all the new fashions and soft furnishing that were on trend at that particular time. John Lewis are a fabulous company to work for, I was fortunate to enjoy a mid-career break whilst working for them and during that time off I evaluated what I wanted to do next.
I have always enjoyed art and being creative, and an opportunity came up for me to work in a local senior school in Derbyshire where I have worked as an Art Technician for the past 10 years. I thoroughly enjoy my job as it is so varied, from the age of the students (11yrs-18yrs) and the materials that we use.
Last year my Mother moved into a smaller property, which meant that she needed to down size her belongings. She offered me a box for school which contained my Grandmother's jewellery. I remember her wearing them from when I was a child, she used to wear thick wool coats with large shawl style collars and always had a broach pinned on, so I could picture her wearing most of the jewels that were in that box, I couldn't bear to get rid of them.
Summer 2012 I looked into ideas online that I might be able to use them for, and the rest is history. I managed to make 3 bouquets from them...so needless to say that is why I call this business "Maggie Rose Bouquets" after my Grandmother.
Maggie Rose is the lady in the center of this image, she is stood with her husband, my Grandfather Tommy and they were attending their youngest sons wedding.
All my life I have been brought up in a very creative household... From a very young age, my house was always the place to go because we would always be busy making things, whether it was making femo beads for bracelets or getting the sewing machine out, making cushions... I was always up to something with my family and friends.
I have always enjoyed art and being creative, at school I would spend as much time as I could in the art department, even after school... Gaining myself GCSEs in Art, photography and textiles.
In 2011 I started my job in a local senior school in Sheffield where I have worked as an Design Technology Technician for the past 4 years. I thoroughly enjoy my job as it is so varied, from chopping wood, sewing with the students to cooking up a lovely restaurant quality meal.
I am enjoying being part of "Maggie Rose Bouquets" and helping my mother. It's so rewarding, to see the brides faces when they receive there bespoke bouquet.
